Optimal Signal Processing in Cavity Ring-down Spectroscopy

چکیده
In this chapter, the authors present a systematic statistical analysis of cavity ring-down signal extraction. The traditional uncorrelated least squares fit can be generalized to the situation with data correlation (e.g. caused by data filtering, which is essential to minimize noise). If the data is sufficiently highly sampled, the effect of the data correlation can be included by introducing an effective variance of the data. This correction has substantial influence on the estimation of the standard error of the fit parameters for correlated data, especially for the fitted decay rate k0, because this determines the final sensitivity. For both the white noise dominated and the shot noise dominated situations, the sensitivity limit is given. The authors found that the bias of k in the white noise situation is normally very small and can be neglected. The authors also compared several commonly used alternative algorithms in cavity ringdown community. These mathods include linearized weighted least squares fit, determining the decay rate by Fourier transform, corrected successive integration (CSI)

Optical heterodyne detection in cavity ring-down spectroscopy
Polarization-selective optical heterodyne detection is shown to enhance the practical sensitivity of cavity ring-down spectroscopy. Initial experiments demonstrate a signal-to-noise ratio above 31 dB. Minor improvements should yield shot-noise-limited operation. q 1998. Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
متن کاملNovel detection of aerosols: combined cavity ring-down and fluorescence spectroscopy.
High fluences inside cavity ring-down spectroscopy optical resonators lend themselves to fluorescence or Raman spectroscopy. An instrument at 488 nm was developed to measure extinction, and fluorescence of aerosols. A detection limit of 6 x 10;-9 cm;-1Hz;-1/2 (0.6 Mm;-1Hz;-1/2) was achieved. The fluorescence spectral power collected from a single fluorescent microsphere was 10 to 20 pW/nm. This...

Cavity ring-down (CRD) is a sensitive variant of traditional absorption spectroscopy that has found increasing use in a number of chemical measurement applications. This review focuses on applications of cavity ring-down spectroscopy that will be of interest to environmental chemists and analytical chemists working on environmental problems. The applications are classified into direct monitorin...

We report on a novel approach to cavity ring-down spectroscopy with the sample gas in saturated-absorption regime. This technique allows us to decouple and simultaneously retrieve the empty-cavity background and absorption signal, by means of a theoretical model that we developed and tested. The high sensitivity and frequency precision for spectroscopic applications are exploited to measure, fo...
متن کاملNoise caused by a finite extinction ratio of the light modulator in CW cavity ring-down spectroscopy
A model is presented for the effect of a finite extinction ratio of the light modulator used in continuous wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CW-CRDS) experiments. We present a simple analytical expression for the minimum isolation required to prevent a significant increase in the fluctuations of the cavity decay rate, which determine the sensitivity of the method. We also present systematic m...
